Hemp seeds are round, small, and dull-brown in appearance. These seeds are often used by breeders just before and during the breeding season, as they are an excellent source of protein and healthy fats. Hemp seed can also be given to non-breeding and pet birds in lesser quantities. Birds which are molting or need to gain weight may significantly benefit from the addition of hemp seed in their diet.

Hemp is very high in fats and proteins, best fed in a blend of other seeds or in a controlled portion. Breeding, molting, or ill birds may benefit from slightly more hemp seed. The table below is a guideline percentage of the bird's daily diet. Monitor your bird's health and condition. Make adjustments accordingly.
| Most Species | up to 5% |
| High-Energy Species (Parrotlets, Macaws, etc.) | up to 10% |
Consider the ration in relation to other things your bird is consuming. Hemp seeds are high in fat, birds eating an abundance of other rich seeds (flaxseed, oats, sunflower) may do better with a smaller portion offered. As with all foods, variety is important.
Store seeds in a cool, dry location. Allow airflow to prevent the development of molds that may cause illness like Aspergillosis. For extended storage periods (longer than 3-4 months), store in the freezer.
